During this fall’s New York Fashion Week, history was made. No, I don’t mean Marc by Marc Jacobs officially bringing back the blue eyeshadow or evenOscar de La Renta making a dress look like a beehive and making us all want to wear it. I’m talking about the fact that the first ever plus-size designer was able to show her collection at the Fashion Law Institute’s multi-designer presentation. If you haven’t already, meet Eden Miller and Cabiria Style, self-described as “whimsical, sensual style in sizes 12-24.” As a plus-size woman,... [Lire la suite]

Lume Light-Infused Clothing Highlights Wearable Tech

Wearable computing, for those who may not know what it is, comes in many different forms, such as a shirt outfitted with energy-harvesting devices to power mobile electronics or headgear like Google Glass. Even Android-based watches are a part of this growing trend. We tend to think of wearable computing as providing a function rather than being purely aesthetic, pleasing to the eye, or the latest in fashion. That notion is being laid to rest by a fashion designer working with Jorge & Esther located in Barcelona, Spain.... [Lire la suite]

Cuban-American In Miami Becomes The Man Behind Beautiful Women's Hair

Like Penélope, Salma, and JLo (sort of), Cuban-American hair superstar Oribe Canales is famous enough to go by his first name only. Indeed, those first-name-only types are all clients of the South Florida-based 57-year-old with the dazzling smile, infinite tattoos, tireless creativity, and drop-dead bombshell-gorgeous cover-girl hair results. “Sexy hair works anytime,” says Oribe about his unapologetically glam philosophy. “Glossy hair with personality, exaggerated, luxurious, fastidious but a bit undone – that’s what’s modern,... Runway beauty: Think bold and raw

Natural, raw and fresh were some of the words used by hair and makeup artists who created the beauty looks for New York Fashion Week's spring-summer 2014 collections earlier this month. "Overall, there's a very happy look to the makeup, with pops of color on the eyes, lips and cheeks," said Gregory Arlt, director of makeup artistry for MAC Cosmetics, who was backstage leading makeup teams for several shows this season. Some designers opted out of makeup altogether. Moisturizer and an eyelash curler seemed to be the extent of what... [Lire la suite]

North Queenslander with designs on success

Designer Jason Chetcuti, of Mackay, made it to the finals with a “dream dress” for Australia's Miss Universe representative Olivia Wells, and hopes to see his work on the Moscow catwalk. A labour of love, Mr Chetcuti spent over 250 hours creating the pure silk and chiffon gown, adding intricate beadwork, feathers, shells and jewels to capture the beauty of one of Australia's natural icons. Mr Chetcuti appeared earlier this week on Seven's Sunrise with his fellow finalists, to show off his creation and encourage competition voting.... [Lire la suite]

Livia Firth, Designers Create for AIDS

Livia Firth, Natalie Massenet and Anna Wintour joined forces at London’s historic Apsley House, the home of the first Duke of Wellington, to raise awareness for the Global Fund — an international financing institution dedicated to raising funds to prevent and treat AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis — and to launch Firth’s Green Carpet Challenge (GCC) collection. Firth, wife of actor Colin Firth, enlisted five British brands to create dresses designed to meet social and environmental benchmarks developed by the GCC. Christopher Bailey... [Lire la suite]

Fantasy gowns and summer raves at London Fashion Week

There was something for everyone at London Fashion Week on Sunday, with fantasy gowns from Temperley London, cool elegance from Paul Smith and a vision of long summer days and heady nights from Topshop Unique. In an old granary building behind King's Cross Station, Paul Smith kept to his signature style with a collection of elegant matching suits in vivid colours ranging from clean white and bright blue to sunshine yellow. Transparent silk voile shirts were unbuttoned low to reveal a sliver of skin and tucked into high-waisted,... [Lire la suite]

Floral Prints Go Dark for Fall Fashion

'UP UNTIL NOW, it's been about how much print you can wear," said Mary Katrantzou, the London designer known for her wildly inventive and usually wildly hued prints. Ms. Katrantzou was talking about the clashing, pile-it-on, head-to-toe looks popular on street-style blogs. But this season, the best motifs take a much quieter approach. As the screams of neon yellow and fluorescent fuchsia from previous seasons fade like a summer tan, they're being replaced by darkly romantic floral motifs—sometimes evoking film noir, sometimes a bit... Vera Wang hits the artful athlete trend

Vera Wang aimed for all As on her runway Tuesday at New York Fashion Week: artful, architectural and athletic. She made the grade with silk gauze baseball jackets, chiffon gowns with mesh panels and often-beaded, racer-style backs and a stretch-mesh hoodie paired with a net bustier and stretch jersey skirt. Many of her looks were black, which made the flashes of cobalt blue, geranium red and citron yellow more impactful. She used a painter's brush-stroke print on camisole slips and chiffon gowns to make another visual statement,... [Lire la suite]

Alexa sweaty in leather

Alexa Chung sometimes worries she won't get out of her leather clothes, leaving her "half human, half cow". Alexa Chung feels "clammy" in leather shorts. The British fashionista is known for being fearless when it comes to rocking the latest trends and often shows off amazing style combinations at events. However, the things that are in vogue might not always be the most comfortable or easy to wear. "They're so clammy; I can't take them off!" she laughed to BBC Radio 1 when asked about her leather shorts. "They're stuck to me... [Lire la suite]
